INTRO
As Russian troops brutally and unjustly crossed the Ukrainian border in February 2022, a coalition of visual communication and branding professionals, artists, and designers wanted to do their (p)art to aid the country.
To make an impact, they aimed to create a statement leveraging the symbolic aspect of Russia’s unjust attack.
Solution
The artists chose to fight back by targeting the core of Russian propaganda: the Z symbol – a 21st-century swastika. Remarkably, a single stroke could change its meaning, as the stroked letter Z (“hourglass”) represents positive concepts like equality, friendship, allies, time, etc. This gesture demonstrated how oppression can be combatted through the use of imagination and the will to act. And so, the Counterstroke was born, and its applicability knew no limits.
Execution
The coalition created a series of NFT art pieces featuring a stroked-over Z for sale, collecting donations for Ukraine through Crypto Fund of Ukraine. The project expanded to include printed shirts, typefaces, and even craft beer, with all participants committed to either donating direct funds to Ukraine or inspiring others to express their stance against war crimes occurring in Ukraine. Ultimately, a nonprofit charity, Ambulances for Ukraine, adopted the project to raise funds for sending ambulances to help civilians in Ukraine. Altogether, this campaign went to that there truly is more than one way to draw a line against evil.
